The old X-Men quit, but Cyclops stays behind to lead the new team. Nefaria takes over Valhalla air force base, and the X-Men move in to stop him.
NOTE: This issue marks a milestone for the series as it dramatically changes the cast for the first time. Marvel Girl, Angel, Iceman, Havok and Lorna Dane quit the X-Men in this issue. Cyclops remains to lead the new team, previously introduced in Giant-Size X-Men #1. Professor X also remains as the X-Men's mentor.
